CHAPTER 6

CLAIRE

Back at Claire’s house…

“Mama, I know you said he’s playing me, but I think he really cares. Maybe when the baby is born he’ll come around,” Claire said to her mother who was doing another friend’s hair in the kitchen. “I have a feeling my little girl is going to be so beautiful.”

“Men like him never come around, baby girl. Hand me that strand of hair.”

Claire hopped down off of the bar stool and handed her mother the braiding hair. “Everybody’s not the same, ma.”

“But men like him are. You know I’m mad at you for having sex with him without a condom. But, at least you roped yourself a rich one. That nigga gonna be paying out his ass when our lawyers get through with him. Trust me, my grandbaby gonna have everything money can buy, courtesy of his or her father. How do you think I got my business and this half a million-dollar home? Your father funded half of this before he got himself locked up for dealing. Trust me, I know his kind.”

“Well if we do get anything from him, I want a new house of my own.”

“What you want a new house for?” she frowned. “You got everything you need right here. Your own room, your own bathroom and more privacy than a teenager knows what to do with. You won’t be able to do nothing more if you left trust me. If I had it as sweet as you, I wouldn’t leave here before I turned twenty-one.”

“Ma, when I turn eighteen in a month I want my own place. I told you, I always wanted somebody I could take care of.” She rubbed her belly. “And I’m gonna have that with my baby in my own house.”

Ricky burst into laughter. “You know what, I was mad at first until I realized one important thing.”

“What’s that?” Claire asked.

“You don’t know how to take care of nobody else. You barely know how to take care of yourself. So how the fuck are you going to get a place of your own?”

“I don’t know, I guess I’m gonna keep trying.”

“Well start by cleaning up your room,” Ricky responded, sensing her daughter’s seriousness with wanting to leave.

Ricky would never admit it out loud, but outside of loving her daughter too hard, she was also a control freak. She needed to know what she did, and whom she did it with and this often made Claire feel as if she would forever be a child.

Ricky had one other child, a still born son, and she never got over the feeling that had she prayed a little harder, he would’ve survived. This insecurity was the primary reason she and Claire didn’t get along.

Once she was in her room, she threw herself on the bed, and then vomited in her trashcan. That was the only part about being pregnant that she never got use to, unlike some girls, she never knew when her morning sickness would arrive because she didn’t get a warning.
